Matt’s background

Matt was born in Manchester in July 1996. Growing up as a keen sportsman and inquisitive about the state of the world, Matt had an early passion for journalism and the news. This passion not only saw Matt dabble in a variety of sports, but it also saw him keen to learn more about the workings of the world. He wrote from a young age for local newspapers and blogs, and had news and magazine subscriptions throughout his childhood, a habit which continues to this day.

After graduating from the University of Sheffield in BA Hons French & Politics, Matt went on to work full time for the Association of Liberal Democrat Councillors and Campaigners learning the craft of campaigns and communications. He soon moved to Brussels to work as an Accredited Parliamentary Assistant (APA) in the European Parliament for a Liberal Democrat MEP. From here, Matt harnessed his deep political knowledge and writing skills through a series of positions in the political and publishing sectors.

Matt now works as Opinion & Policy Report at The Parliament, a political magazine with 30 years of heritage. Here, he edits and manages the magazine’s opinion section in print and online and is always on the look out for the right people to provide the correct stories. He also leads the magazine’s policy reports from ideation to implementation, writing himself when he finds the time. In the role, he has also worked on camera to interview and present stories and moderate panels on a range of topics.

Whilst working full time in Brussels, he gained his Msc in Journalism from Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) with the grade of ‘Great Distinction’. In his master’s, Matt explored topics including nationalism, media technology and podcast production. He also published a thesis investigating the state of the modern football journalism industry where he spoke with football journalists Carl Anka, Jonas Dalgård, Conor McNamara, David Ornstein, Frank Raes, Kristof Terreur and Henry Winter.
